Susannah Johnson was born on 21/11/1868 at Peckham, Surrey. Her mother died at Malta on 24/3/1871and her father, a sapper in Royal Engineers, gave her to be raised in England. She was raised by G W Heywood/Sarah Howarth
She appears as S. Heywood aged 12 in the 1881 UK Census living at 5 Sidney St Salford born in Chatham, Kent, and again in the 1891 UK Census aged 22 with the same address and birthplace.
She appears on her son Fred Clarke's birth certificate as being born in Gibraltar.
A few months after her foster mother, Sarah Howarth, died (in 1891), she left Tilbury, UK on 9/9/1891 with G. W. Heywood per SS Ormuz and arrived in Melbourne in November 1891
Married 4/7/1893 at South Yarra giving biological parents as Benjamin Johnstone, a sapper in Royal Engineers, and Amelia Whyborne.
She had seven children and appears on birth and death records with various surnames including Johnson, Heywood, Johnstone and Clarke.
She had a brain tumour thought to be inoperable in the 1940s but lived on until she died at Port Arlington in 1952 aged 83

By 1881 she had been adopted by George William Heywoodand his wife and was living with them in Manchester.

She worked as a Dress Maker in 1891 and resided at Salford. ⁵

She immigrated in Nov 1891 to Melbourne, Australia. ⁶

Susannah married James Richard Clarke, son of John Clarke and Mary Jakeman Heywood, on 4 Jul 1893 in Christ Church South Yarra. (James Richard Clarke was born in 1866 in S Yarra ⁷ and died in 1935.)
